Tutor helping struggling child with math and science
06/05/2015
Although children should be able to pay attention and stay focused on a task, it is easy for them to lose interest and get distracted. Knowing what is at the root of these distractions and lack of interest will help resolve the larger issue. It is necessary to take the time to figure out what is causing these distractions instead of simply giving in and handing over the television remote. The Tutoring Center in Oro Valley has some tips to help your child improve their attention span.

Creativity

If your child is having a hard time completing tasks, figure out creative ways to present these same tasks. Instead of asking a child to practice writing letters in a notebook, experiment with new materials. This can instead be molding letters with play dough or writing them on the sidewalk with chalk. The same task is being accomplished, but presenting it in a creative way makes it feel less like work and more like play. Figuring out your child’s learning style, whether they work better with music, images, or in social settings, will help you create activities better suited for them.

Distractions

Being able to recognize distractions will also help create a better atmosphere for your child to thrive in. Distractions can come in many forms, whether they are physical distractions in a space or the state of the child. When a child is tired or hungry they will be distracted making it hard for them to pay attention. A healthy snack and some downtime will benefit the child before diving into any homework or other tasks. Being in the same room and physically close to the child while giving instructions will be more effective as opposed to yelling them from another room.

Stimulate concentration

Limiting the time your child spends on electronic devices, such as smartphones, video games and computers, and instead making sure they get enough exercise and participate in outdoor activities can also increase their attention span. The overstimulation and exposure to fast paced cartoons and games on electronic devices have been proven to weaken attention spans. It is important to involve them in activities that will help stimulate concentration. Examples of these activities are puzzles, reading, building forts or even helping with dinner.

The most important thing is to be patient. Don’t turn to negative remakes when things get difficult, but rather focus on the positives. Positive feedback will lead to better behavior and more interest in activities.
